Albert
Frey
(1903-1998)
Born in Switzerland
in 1903, Frey worked briefly for LeCorbusier (on Villa Savoye at Poissy
(1929). Arriving in the U.S. in 1930, Frey became the first of LeCorbusier's
students to build in this country. Interpreting the International
Style, Frey adapted glass, steel, fiberglass and aluminum to the unique
topography, climate and light of the desert. Albert Frey started a
long, prolific Palm Springs career in 1934. Producing over 200 building
designs, Frey's specialty was private residences. His innovative designs
offered simple solutions to the problems of blending modern architecture
with the environment. A no-frills approach and use of simple, durable
materials became his signature style that reflected his fondness for
economy of design.
