Ye Olde Design Center Adverts - among the best reminders of what was 'modern' in San Diego

Tuesday December 23, 2014

Following Modern San Diego friend Dan Luczak's purchase of the Leipman House, I posted a biography of architect Bruce Dammann HERE.

For those under the impression that William Krisel came up with the butterfly roof on his own, Curbed clarifies the connection to Le Corbusier HERE.

For those of us that have continued to attribute Herman Miller’s 1956 Marshmallow Sofa, and both the Ball and Sunburst clocks manufactured by Howard Miller, to George Nelson, HERE is a nice profile for you to read. The San Diego Natural History Museum is launching a new show, Coast to Cactus, in January. The show's focal point is a diorama set around the patio the lead exhibit designer grew up in - and the San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles calls 'Mid-century Modern'. Read more HERE.

Curbed posted a nice piece on Paul Rudolph's 'Sarasota Modern' work HERE. It serves as a great primer on the topic.

For those that have perused Sunset magazine over the years; have found their guides to landscaping and home improvement in stacks at estate sales; and fans of Cliff May's push for the 'ranch house' through its pages, must read about the sale of the magazine's headquarters. Including the 1951 Cliff May designed building, and landscape by Thomas Church, the 7-acre compound in Menlo Park just sold and the future is unclear. Read more HERE.

Devo's Gerald Casale, who recently restored Richard Neutra's 1936 Kun House, is profiled by the LA Times HERE.

The good folks at Guardian Stewardship are working on a book on Horizon Homes across the US. I profiled San Diego's Horizon Homes HERE. You can keep up to date on their book project HERE.

As always, our good friends at Mr. California are offering discounts, sale items, and continue to offer new clothing HERE. One of their elves mentioned that pants are on the way!
