The Grossmont Spec House by Lloyd Ruocco was demolished on Saturday. The house, formerly owned by the Ishikawa family, has been taken down by the developer who purchased the land to make way for a parking lot or something nearly as good. Upon its sale last year by the original owner, many of us grew concerned on two points: 1) why nobody smart bought the house and 2) once sold, how long it would be before it was torn down. Original photographs as well as images of the demolition process are here.

Read this week's Julius Shulman profile by the LA Weekly here.

Visited both the Blackwell Residence and Eales Residence by Sim Bruce Richards today while working on the Real Estate section. Both are fairly good deals in the +/- $2M price point. Both should be restored - the Eales house being the easier of the two structures to get back to blueprint.

As summer approaches, it's time to get the Real Estate section in order. This section is one of the most important roles this site plays in educating the public and professionals alike as well as reaching out to potential buyers to protect the wealth of modern architecture in San Diego County. Realtors and buyers are on the frontline of preservation. If you are a realtor, a seller or a buyer that has used this site, I would like to hear from you. Please drop me a line - or email me a brief testimonial as to how you use the site to aid in your search.

The Pearl will be opening this summer. Check their site for more information.

I am working on a major overhaul to the Real Estate section. But before I finish that, there are several outstanding projects on the market for well over $1M. Sim Bruce Richards' Blackwell Residence and Eales Residence in Point Loma are currently on the market. A Fred Liebhardt design on Romero in La Jolla, a Palmer & Krisel in Pacifica, and a very unique house with an indoor/outdoor pool/grotto in Point Loma are all currently listed. Email me for more details.
