In a 1949 'Magazine San Diego' piece on National City, this image, with the caption
'Home Shown is By E.J. Christman, National City Building Contractor', is exactly why we
need to dig deeper into National City's modernist past... This may be one of the
'Modern Spec Bungalows' Christman (or Chrisman) was known for at the time.

Finally finished an article on the Timken Museum of Art. Please check it out HERE.

From a 1949 issue of 'Magazine San Diego' is this advert for A. Quincy Jones' Sun Villa.
A retail showroom to order your 'Home of Tomorrow' was located at the intersection where
the Chicken Pie Shop stands today.

Not much new here today but wanted to share yesterday's excursion to The California Room within San Diego's Central Library. Their collection of 'Magazine San Diego' and 'San Diego & Point' issues are a treasure trove to rediscover 'modern San Diego' in. Also check out additions to the Armin Richter page HERE.

Earl Giberson's design for Dick Grihalva's Buick dealership on El Cajon Boulevard

Saturday May 7, 2011

Back in January 2010, I posted a request for information on a number of buildings contained within a (ca. 1960) Architects of San Diego AIA brochure titled "Buildings of Interest in San Diego California". Of those buildings architect Earl Giberson’s Grihalva Buick @ 3400 El Cajon Blvd caught someone’s eye. The grandson of Dick Grihalva dropped me a line stating “Dick Grihalva was my grandfather.  That was his first dealership.  He eventually went to El Cajon and built Grihalva Chevrolet (now Bob Baker @ 900 Arnele St), and Fairway Cadillac (now De La Fuente Cadillac in El Cajon).  If you see either of those dealerships you will see they resemble the Spanish villas like many homes out in Borrego Springs.  He had a vacation home in Puerta Vallarta Mexico and built these dealerships to resemble that.” In addition to the e-mail he sent along the photo (above) of the dealership from the ‘50s.

Granada Hills hosts a number of Eichler homes -- and next weekend you can tour several of them! Additionally architectural writer David Weinstein will present "Joseph Eichler and His Architects: The Men Behind Eichler Homes" during a Friends of the Gamble House lecture at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena on the night before the tour. Learn more HERE.

Greta Magnusson Grossman’s 1948 home for herself in Beverly Hills was recently purchased, remodeled, expanded and now it’s up for sale again! Check it out HERE.
