Howard B. Van Heuklyn

Architect | 1922-2004

Howard Van Heuklyn was born in Glendale on August 27, 1922 and served in the US Army Engineers and Air Force between 1943-45. Much of his tour of duty was reportedly spent in China where he drew aerial maps. The young veteran graduated from USC with a Bachelors of Architecture (in 1947) and married concert singer Vera Jean Vary (in 1950).

Van Heuklyn joined Risley & Gould as an Associate in 1952 and won an Honor Award from the AIA in 1960 for Magnavox Corp in Torrance.

Over the course of his career, Mr. Van Heuklyn designed churches, schools, university buildings, shopping malls, hospitals, and medical office buildings. He prepared master plans and designed several campus structures for Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Principia College in Missouri, Pierce College, Cal State Fullerton and UCLA.
