Rob Roy Bittman
1915 - 1975While little is know about Mr. Bittman, we are aware of two homes he designed in La Jolla.
Architect Rob Roy Bittman Jr. appears to have been born around 1915 in Kansas. In 1940, he was living at 428 South Grove Street, Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas and was the son of Rob Roy Sr. (born circa 1877) and Elizabeth Bittman.
By 1946, Bittman and his wife, Mabel, were living in the San Diego area. By 1950, Bittman was volunteering for the San Diego Mineral & Gem Society. He was a military architect (“of buildings, not ships”) and was promoted to Major in the 11th Marine Corps Reserve District in 1951. By 1956, he was working from 6652 Tyrian Avenue in La Jolla. By 1957 he was involved with the La Jolla Assembly.
From at least 1960 until his death he was working from 2641 Inyaha Lane. He earned his FAIA in 1975 by a nomination from Homer Delawie. He appears to have died in 1975.
Partial List of Projects
Bittman, Rob Roy Jr. and Mabel Residence (1955-61)
2641 Inyaha Lane, La Jolla
*While Townsend and Kay Cromwell paid $3,759 for lot #4 within Scripps Estates Associates (in 1954), they relinquished it by 1955 to Rob Roy Jr. and Mabel Bittman. Rob was reportedly an architect for the US Navy, and he designed and built the house on Inyaha Lane in 1960. The couple left the area for a few years, while the house was rented, and then returned. Mabel continued to live in the home until 2000.
Monsees, Dr. & Mrs. Residence (1956-57)
7785 E Roseland Drive, La Jolla
*While Frederick Liebhardt designed Dr. Monsees’ office, Bittman designed the family home nearby.
