Thornton Ladd

Architect | 1924-2010

Following graduation from USC in 1952, Ladd worked for Pereira & Luckman before opening his own firm Thornton Ladd & Associates. By 1958, Ladd partnered with architect, and USC classmate, John Field Kelsey - Ladd & Kelsey was based in Pasadena. The firm is most well known for their design of the Pasadena Art Museum.

Thornton Ladd was born in Portland, Oregon on January 29, 1924. He attended the University of Southern California where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1952. He was a designer for Pereira & Luckman for two years from 1952 to 1954. In 1954, Ladd opened his own firm Thornton Ladd & Associates. By 1958, Ladd entered into a partnership with architect, and USC classmate, John Field Kelsey. For many years Ladd & Kelsey was based in Pasadena. The firm is well-known for the design of the Pasadena Art Museum (which became the Norton Simon Museum circa 1974) as well as private residences throughout Los Angeles County.
